Mahale Mountains & Chimpanzee Safari

Mahale chimpanzee trekking Mahale Mountains National Park on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika is one of Africa’s most magical and remote wildlife destinations best known for wild chimpanzee trekking and pristine rainforest scenery framed by the world’s second-deepest freshwater lake.

Why Mahale Mountains Are a Must-Visit

Mahale delivers a deeply immersive wilderness experience few places on earth can match:

  • Wild chimpanzee trekking in dense forest habitats.
  • Lake Tanganyika beaches, perfect for swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling.
  • Rich biodiversity — including red colobus monkeys, yellow baboons, forest birds and more.
  • Hiking adventures, such as trekking to Mount Nkungwe, Mahale’s highest peak (2,460 m).
  • Peaceful boat safaris at sunrise or sunset.

This combination of forest, lake and primates makes Mahale one of Tanzania’s most rewarding safari experiences.

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season (June–October)

Best for chimpanzee trekking because the chimps descend to lower slopes and trails are drier and easier to hike.

Wet Season (November–April)

Lush landscapes, fewer tourists and great birdwatching — though some lodges may close and trails are muddy.

How to Get There from Dar es Salaam

1. Flight (Recommended)

  • Take a domestic flight from Dar es Salaam (Julius Nyerere Intl.) to Kigoma (≈ 2.5–3 hours).
  • From Kigoma: either take a small air transfer to Mahale airstrip (≈ 45 min) or a boat transfer (≈ 4–6 hrs).
  • Some operators schedule direct charter flights from Dar or Arusha to Mahale (airstrip access only).

2. Overland + Boat (Adventure Option)

  • Road travel to Kigoma is possible but long and rough, taking ~2–3 days.
  • From Kigoma, board a speedboat, dhow or the historic MV Liemba steamship for a scenic journey to Mahale.

No roads lead directly into the park — all access is by air or boat.
